Way Better Than Soda

One of the more aggravating things about having a corn allergy is the need to avoid corn syrup.  We were already trying to limit high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and soda was saved for special occasions (like birthday parties where there weren't any other choices), but with our new allergy list, soda is off-limits all together.  Most soda in the US is sweetened with HFCS, although there are a few companies that use sugar instead.  To keep the boys from feeling completely out of sync with the rest of their contemporaries, we make our own version of soda with juice and seltzer.  It doesn't solve the birthday party problem, but it does give them something delicious to have for a treat at home.  This recipe comes from that classiest of sources, the Shrek Cookbook :)

Tropical Orange "Soda"

2 cups orange juice
1 can sparkling water (we use lime flavored, unsweetened)
juice from one can of pineapple
juice from one lime

Mix all ingredients together in a medium pitcher.  Garnish with pineapple, strawberries and lime slices.  Serves 4- 6 people.  Don't make too much at once, because the bubbles from the seltzer will disappear!

  1. Nice recipe....laughing at your source. ;)

I make something similar with club soda or seltzer water with a pinch of salt.

  2. @Jenny.... do you add any flavorings besides the salt? (P.S. All my best stuff comes from movie cookbooks ;) )
