We are lucky to spend a good part of our summers on Cape Cod, in Massachusetts. We stay in a cottage and cook most of our own food, so most of the time we don't have to worry too much about our food allergies away from home. This year however, quite by accident, we stumbled on an actual gluten-free restaurant just 20 minutes away from our cottage! (We found their booth at our local farmer's market.)
Idgy's Gluten-Free Dining is located in South Yarmouth, Mass., just off exit 8 from Rt. 6. This tiny cafe features gluten-free breakfasts (including pancakes, bagels, and egg sandwiches) and lunches (including sandwiches, paninis, pizza, and quesadilla), along with a delicious array of breads and desserts to take home. In addition, there are plain pizza shells, plain panini breads, and plain pie shells available to take home and customize yourself.
Idgy's website also features a yummy array of treats that you can order online for delivery right to your door! Found at http://idgysglutenfree.com, the site includes bagels, breads, cinnamon rolls, dessert bars, hamburger buns, panini shells, pie shells, vegan cookies and vegan cupcakes for sale. Idgy's provides catering on the Cape, and also creates gluten-free birthday cakes to order!
Idgy's GF Breakfast Sandwich with Egg & Sausage |
Idgy's restaurant is a small little place, with room for about 10 people to sit and eat, so most folks stop by to take out food. Be prepared to wait for a few minutes -- the staff is small and everything is cooked to order.
The cafe is bright and cheery, and features several chalkboard menus to help you choose your favorite gluten-free items. It was fun to see so many choices that we could actually eat! Nice for mom to say "yes" instead of "no" all the time :)
What's amazing is that Idgy's recipes, developed by owner Deb Collins, actually taste good. It's hard to tell that some of them are even gluten free! Deb has 28 years of restaurant management and cooking experience, and she has certainly polished these recipes to a high standard.
Our favorite dishes are the breakfast bagel sandwich, with egg and sausage, and the amazing dessert bars in every flavor. Ingredients are available for every item, so you can be sure that there are no other allergens in your choice. Many items are vegan as well, for the egg-avoiders in your family.

Smoothies are also available, and rounded out our meals nicely. You can also get espresso and cappuccino, as well as nachos, wings, spaghetti, grilled cheese, and more.
If you're vacationing on Cape Cod in the future, stop by Idgy's and see what you think. We loved finding an all-gluten-free restaurant. What a treat to be able to eat ANYTHING on the menu! There is no such thing where we live during the rest of the year!
